US Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock

In late October, Sue had a chance to join other members of the Great Lakes Cruising Club for a seven hour outing on the US Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock, a 225-foot long cutter stationed in Port Huron, Michigan. Her primary missions are aids-to-navigation (maintenance, removal and replacement), search and rescue, environmental protection and ice-breaking.

The event that Sue attended included a trip into lower Lake Huron where a simulated rescue of the Sea Cadet ship Grayfox was performed and then had the opportunity to test fire expired flares of all sorts. They also got to see shipboard operations first hand, and even ate dinner with the crew.
